Sharon Gannon, director of Jivamukti Yoga School, made a rare appearance at the Manhattan flagship this weekend. dropping in to teach two classes. I was fortunate enough to secure a spot the Saturday class.

I say fortunate, because although I was an invited guest (by Jivamukti's PR person), it was a battle to get into the studio. By the time I reached the front desk--at 4:40 for a 5pm class--the three young girls working check-in had no knowledge of me, my name appeared on no list. Nor did they care to know or go out of their way to accommodate me. I was flustered and aggravated. The girls'--in matching shirts-- sunny 20-year old charm quickly dissolved into an "I really don't care" attitude. "You can sign in on the waiting list" was as much help as I got. "Next!" (Fat chance I'd get in, either, since a friend of mine, waiting since 4:10, hadn't.) Why wouldn't Jivamukti want to be nice to the press?

This was my first experience at Jivamukti on Saturday.

The rest followed in a similar fashion.

I took matters into my own hands, found the studio manager, and got myself a place in class (though even he, too, had to insist that I belonged there.) Then, there was the question of physical space. One of the floor monitors thoughtfully put out a mat for me. But we were jam-packed, mat to mat, end to end, just like the old days.

And just like the old days, people around me seemed more oblivious than attentive. Coming into a stretch, the blond newbie in the row in front of me kicked me hard in the neck and shoulder. She then got up and looked at me as if astonished to see someone behind her. Her look seemed to say: why are YOU there? I asked myself the same question-- why am I here?--as I moved my mat three inches back, out of harm's way. She didn't seem to plan to move her mat (and why would she, really? kicking someone in yoga class is a normal way to defend your space, isn't it?). She offered no apology.

Sharon began the class with a slow, simple vinyasa, getting us into the mood to flow. (I should mention that Russell Simmons was practicing in the back row, to everyone's rapt attention.) Then we sat down and sang--I'm not kidding--a George Harrison song that expressed an idea Sharon wanted us to consider, "Any road will take you there." "Sometimes you're cool, sometimes you're lame." The class was about setting an intention and then setting sail. Where is "there" you might ask? Apparently, it's "nowhere, duh." A concept that required no further explanation. (As in that popular 70s expression, wherever you go, there you are?)

Harrison's song was something Cat Stevens might have sung on a groovy afternoon in the 1960s--but in fact Harrison wrote and recorded it in 2002. The lyrics were sloppy, the sentiment easy, and the arrangement wildly outdated. I sang along the first time, while Sharon brought her headset around and had students sing into the mike, because I didn't want to be caught not singing along. I feared punishment. So did the friend beside me.

The we did a free-style vinyasa practice and they played the dreadful song again. I used my yogic skills to block it out (and then got kicked in the head).

Sharon continued with the class, nicely sequenced, fairly basic, nothing too sweaty. Then suddenly came some advanced poses quite close to the warm-up poses. Most of the class were women in their 20s, whose bodies are sort of perpetually ready for the challenge, but the men and the older women probably needed more time to warm up in order to avoid injury.

More than halfway through, Sharon handed the headset to her co-teacher Jules, a skinny man, with sparse facial hair, who got us into a deep forward bend and then went into a long, rambling story about teaching yoga in prisons. Sharon leapt to the rescue saying, "Jules, is this going to be a long story? You're going to keep them there all that time? Inhale up!"

Jules seemed hesitant and insecure. In fairness, what could he do when Sharon (rightly) corrected him? Perhaps having the studio director in his class made him stumble. His teaching seemed rote, not inventive, not coming from the heart, or from lived experience, but coming from a book or a set of directions. He gave instructions too slowly or too fast, and his jokes missed their mark.

He got us into wheel and embarked on yet another long story, from which Sharon again rescued us. Then he lashed out at her, "So I've got an embarrassing story about Sharon...." She objected--Hey!--and he admitted it was he who was embarrassed. But the whole situation was juvenile. It was highly unprofessional, and dare I say it, irresponsible. The guy seemed to have the most basic yoga training, and no understanding of the deeper reasons for practicing yoga--even as he was instructing us in these meanings.

To her credit, Sharon managed the situation well, but who was it who trained this poor, lost soul? I can't help feeling that the chaos, unfriendliness, and gracelessness of the studio is trickledown: directors instruct staff by their example as much as by their edicts. I get a sense of how the directors behave when they're not on stage.

Finally, we safely reached the end of the class. My nerves were fraught from the discombobulated instructions, poses, music, commentary, the closeness and obliviousness of other students, and the drab colors on the studio walls. What happened to the Jivamukti that was fun and exciting, if a little kooky? What I witnessed on Saturday was a relic--an organization trying to preserve a time gone by. Not Jivamukti's glory days, but the days of hippies, when alternative (and shallow, if I may say so) spiritualities justified themselves by their very existence, and were accompanied by a feeling of superiority, of not being "caught" in someone else's misconceptions, or even lies. Surely we (yogis included) are beyond that?

It was then especially irritating to have Jules read a bad--and rhyming, I might add--poem written by Gannon throughout our 5 minute meditation practice. At the end of a brief savasana, the lights came on abruptly and the music came back--George Harrison once again, ladies and gentlemen! Another sing-a-long with another chance to be broadcast throughout the studio.

This time, I gave my chant sheet to my friend beside me. I declined to sing along. I wondered where the dignity was in this. Where was the yoga? Was it fun for anyone? Or was I alone in feeling alienated, uncomfortable, and vaguely like I was trying out for a club I had no interest in joining?

There's almost never a yoga class that I can't get something from, at least the basic feeling of being more open and receptive. But I left Jivamukti feeling frayed and distressed. It was like being in Whole Foods for an hour at peak time, trying over and over again to pay for groceries, waiting on line, being jostled, trying to be patient. That's okay for Whole Foods--you know what you're getting into--but it's not okay for yoga, any yoga experience. Rather than feeling closer to the divine--in me or in anything else--I felt like I needed to start my day again. Which is too bad since I'd been having a good day up till then. The jangled feeling lasted all night.

Sharon or no Sharon, Jivamukti has grown into a force beyond its directors. It is unfocused, chaotic, and, sad to say, unhelpful. I was surprised that Sharon's presence didn't even things out at the center at all. Let's hope, in spite of this, that this mega-influential studio is still introducing impressionable youngster to the joys of yoga--in spite of what I experienced.

Global Mala NYC--It's Happening

Apologies to readers outside of the city, but I was complaining about New York's meagre showing for Global Mala earlier this week, so I feel the need to amend. Last night I got notice that we're not as lame as it seems.Jivamukti and Integral Yoga Institute have taken on the challenge, and will present NYC Metro Area Global Mala Yoga for Peace Event (a mouthful--and a concert/kirtan) at Baruch College's Mason Hall, Sunday, September 20th, 6 - 10pm.Your $15 donation goes to Animal Mukti, a spay and neuter program established by Sharon Gannon at the New York Humane Society.  (This event is looking for volunteers, hint hint.)

Earlier in the day, Yoga for Peace will host an outdoor mala from noon til 3pm---that's right, 108 sun salutations at Battery Park. You need to pre-register and send in your $20 (see the website).

The evening event is a concert and kirtan featuring some key Jiva figures such as Shyamdas (who appeared in the yoga movie, Enlighten Up!) and Sharon Gannon. Swami Ramananda, president of the Integral Yoga Institute, will speak and so will  Sri Dharma Mittra.All big vegans and vegetarians.So, there you go folks! Global Mala NYC is on.

Sunday, June 14, ashtangis and the greater yoga community of New York City gathered in Donna Karan's gorgeous Urban Zen space in Manhattan's West Village for an evening of remembrances celebrating the life and legacy of Shri K. Pattabhi Jois. The white space was hung with long yellow scrims that caught the late afternoon light and brightened the windowless space. The black cushions on the floor were strewn with the petals of red roses, and garlands large and small framed sepia-toned pictures of Guruji at the front of the space. Food was served the back--delicious spicy popped rice with chutney, and samosas and chai. Four hundred people had RSVPd. Those who came were a good-looking bunch, with a lean, clean, healthy glow. Many had young children with them.  It was a grown-up yoga community, one that has weathered their initial zeal for yoga and matured into seasoned practitioners. Representing the yoga world were Alison West (Yoga Union), Leslie Kaminoff (Breathing Project), Michelle Demus (Pure Yoga), Hari Kaur (Golden Bridge), Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman (Urban Zen), James Murphy (Iyengar Yoga NY), Carlos Menjiva (Jivamukti), and someone from Bikram yoga. On the walls around the space, photos of Guruji, his family, his students, and his travels over the years played in a continuous loop. After Eddie Stern, Jois' long-time student, director of Ashtanga Yoga New York, introduced the evening, three Hindu priests changed a part of the Upanishads, 18 minutes of piercing, passionate sound meant to disperse the elements back into the world, to help Guruji on his journey. In the background of this austere music, was the sound of children chirping and playing.

"When a great person is born into the world, he affects everyone," said Stern. "Regardless of whether they follow his teachings or not."

Other speakers mentioned Pattabhi Jois' generosity as a teacher, the inclusiveness of his sangha, and his "sympathetic joy"---his availability to all who had even just a flicker of interest in trying yoga.

"He took complete delight that someone was growing through their yoga practice," said John Campbell, long-time student.Ruth Lauer-Manenti, a senior Jivamukti teacher, relayed the story of how she first went to Mysore to practice with Pattabhi Jois. "Sharon Gannon [director and co-founder of Jivamukti] had just come back from Mysore. She was thin, thin, thin. She looked kind of green and she had a dislocated shoulder. She said, Ruth, you gotta go. So I went the next day."

" 'Yes you can' was his message---it's what so many of us took from him," said Lauer-Manenti whose practice helped her to heal from a near-fatal car accident." He always wanted you to do your best, including making it to his birthday every year."

Jois believed---in fact, he lived the idea---that yoga is the science of transformation: 1% theory, 99% practice. Yoga is mind control: controlling your helter-skelter thoughts and practicing love (plus a 2hr, 6-days-a-week, demanding asana practice) instead. As he famously said, "Do your practice and all is coming."

Heavy Hitters of Yoga Biz at First YJ Conference

I walked around my Brooklyn neighborhood tonight trying to come back to earth. Breathe! I just got done with the 2-day "Business of Yoga" workshop at Yoga Journal's first conference in New York. I am way overstimulated.Judging from my texts and tweets from Thursday and Friday, I am super glad that I do not run a yoga studio. What a headache! I'm a writer not a marketer!

And yet, I do run yoga retreats, and I do want to write more about yoga and business (and the business of yoga).What I learned: the (global) recession doesn't stop people from opening yoga studios. When Bob Murphy of MindBodyOnline (the next inline to be a big stats provider to the yoga world) asked who was planning to open a studio, about half the people in a room of, oh, 50 -70, shot up their hands. Jeez.

Average annual profit at a yoga studio: 17%. Yes, ladies and gents, it's still a labor of love. And as Connie Chan, founder of Levitate Yoga (which, at 7 months pregnant, she just sold) outlined, owning a studio means dealing with: lawyers, accountants, landlords, NY State, and the Feds, and that's even before you've auditioned teachers, painted your walls, and installed check-in software. Oy! And then there are the licence centers that offer teacher training programs. (See Yoga Dork's astute rundown of the complex---and exceedingly compromising (perhaps crippling)---issue.)

People have come from Russia, Poland, Germany, Canada, Brazil and other parts of South America to learn how to either run their existing business better or how to start on the right foot. Charlie Barnett who left finance in America to open Yoga Flow in Sao Paulo said he couldn't imagine doing some of the (very practical) things that the (very experienced) presenters were suggesting---such as drawing up a budget for his studio. In Brazil, he said, things are about 15 years behind. (Not to mention that you have to monitor the banks down there (money disappears from your accounts) and internet service (including networked servers) cut out at least once a day, leaving you, jack-of-all-trades to get systems up again). As has been the case til recently in the US, in Brazil mingling money and yoga is very much frowned upon. But still a studio's gotta survive.

Ganesh Das, managing director of Jivamukti Yoga School, suggests thinking of money as necessary energy, "At Jiva, money is a form of energy that the center needs so we can use the school as a platform for change in this world. Therefore, you have energy coming into our school through purchases that keep operations going, and it goes to teachers as energy that then goes through their teachings and then comes back to us in a circle."

In fact in the US, says Brent Kessel, financial analyst, ashtangi and YJ columnist on money, says we're moving away from an Innocent/Idealist/Caregiver dominated way of running studios. As more people make career changes midlife, they're bringing more level-headed (Guardian), entrepreneurial skills (Empire Builder) attitudes to running yoga studios. (For example, see Yoga High and Mala Yoga in New York.)Ana Forrest's marketing manager Lynann Politte showed us how to brand: color! image! message! consistency! and Beverley Murphy (Bob's wife) demoed guerilla marketing techniques---yes, those postcards *do* have an effect; yes your most dedicated students are worth your love and attention; yes, you do need to have specials if you want revenue.

All in all it was a pretty interesting couple of days, but as I drift towards bed I've got dollar signs in my eyes where there used to be meditating yogis. Guess that's the bottom line talking, huh?

Parsing "Namaste"

A pithy, energetic, and not-too dumbed down article (I mean, c'mon, we've had 10-years of that style of yoga reporting--the, 'wow, it's really weird, but I kind of like it,' stuff) on the cultural background of Om, Hatha, and other fundamentals of yoga class. Nice to see yoga in the "grammar" section, though it's not exactly grammar. B.K.S. Iyengar does more parsing of "Om" in the intro to his classic book, Light on Yoga. It's more of a history lesson. But who's counting?

The writer, Jaimie Epstein, a Jivamukti-trained yoga teacher, former copy editor and sometime-stand-in for William Safire's "On Language" column for the NYT Magazine, says that Hatha yoga's, "present-day roots go back to the Nathas, an Orc-like breed of mercenaries in medieval India who resurrected the methods of hathayoga in the hope of developing the supernatural powers, like invisibility."

The article is a handy little primer with personality on the various styles of yoga popular right now and how they got there, and of the poses you'll find in it. "After an hour or so of pretending you’re three-cornered and sitting like a hero, you’ll get to play dead in savasana, corpse pose, which isn’t a gruesome nod to slasher movies but a way of allowing you to experience the lightness of total surrender."

Lastly, be sure to check out the line of figures in poses at the top of the article. The one third from the end seems to have aquired an extra thigh joint.

New Drink-- Our True Desires

At the opening of Golden Bridge Yoga Center in New York last weekend, and then again at Jivamukti this weekend, I sampled a new super green drink that's coming onto the market, Cellnique. It claims to replenish and renew all 30 trillion cells in my body in just 400 ml.

Advertising (and price) aside (this baby goes for about $5), the drink tastes okay, and feels excellent in the body. It should; it's stuffed with an amazing number of good-for-you ingredients. The list is so long you can hardly read the type, but it includes pea protein, hemp protein, and quinoa, as well as some more expected ingredients like broccoli and spinach. But the exotic far outweighs the domestic here.

What I found really intriguing was the marketing label. It neatly captured what I think we think we're doing when we 1) eat organic 2) practice yoga 3) go to accupuncture or a Chinese doctor 4) go to therapy. It's a kind of 1970s mentality of well-being meeting the lifestyle-consumer mentality of the 2000s. We all have to work now, but we spend our money on health.

Here's the blurb, complete with Cellnique's capitalization and punctuation:"You are beautiful and unique, in every way, all 30 trillion cells... you are Cell-nique (tm)."Our Philosophy--Live Consciously: Most of us don't live on a mountain. Russell Simmons Does Sun Salutes

I've heard a lot about Russell Simmons doing yoga. He's often mentioned with the roster of stars who once (and might still) practice at Jivamukti. He's hip hop's biggest yogi.

In a somewhat erratic interview, Lime.com presents Simmons explaining his practice. Watch him demonstrate sun salutations. He's got good form. But does he always practice with his shoes on?

Taking Our Pulse

Hanna Rosin, former Style writer for the Washington Post and a current contributing editor for The Atlantic, takes the pulse of yoga in America in her December 2006 article "Strike a Pose." According to Rosin, the good old days of hard-core yoga--like that practiced by Jivamukti teachers and practitioners--have been superceded by the more mainstream yoga like Power Yoga taught by Baron Baptiste, a pragmatic blend of gym workout and church pep talk.
